In the hills near Newfield, Maine there stands a house that was built back in the late1700s.  However, the house has something in the kitchen that most houses do not have, a grave marker!

Legend has it that Gideon Straw, built this home and moved into it with his many children.  They lived happily together in the house, that is until the winter of 1826.  It is told that Gideon's daughter Hanna, for unknown reasons, died.  Being that it was in the middle of the cold winter months, they were unable to bury Hanna outdoors properly.  So what they did was pull up the floor boards and dig a grave in the warmer ground under the house.  This is where they placed Hanna's body and marked it with a grave stone set in the floor.

The Straw House changed hands many times, and each time the owners did not stay long.  It is said that the ghost of Hanna Straw would haunt them. Some owners have seen the face of a woman appear in the windows, particularly in the kitchen.  Others have heard footsteps that belonged to an unseen body.  Other witnesses claimed to have seen a full bodied apparition of what appeared to be a young woman wandering about the Straw House.

The house still stands today and is a private residence. As of the publishing of this article, the house was listed for sale.  However, out of respect of the current and future owners, the address is being omitted from this article.
